Because when we pay it attention
We get distracted
We lose our track
Our path
Our speed and focus

I’ve stopped trying to escape it
Or pretend like it’s not there
Struggling with body image feels like blinking sometimes
Except, it’s man-made, not god-given

I find it easier
To just acknowledge it

Almost like making eye contact

I see you there
And don’t deserve my time or attention

I acknowledge it as I run through the house playing a chasing game with my daughter
My reflection catches me
And I see myself at a new angle
An uncomfortable angle
One I’ve not seen before
I track it, Lock eyes
Make the choice

Sorry, but, I’ve got a game to play
And it’s certainly not this one

It’s running from the front door to the back
Pretending to be slower than a 1 year old

Who I can only hope will catch her reflection one day and make a similar choice

A choice to not slow down
A choice to not lose focus
